10:00-10:30 am: Jessye McDowell
Jessye McDowell is an artist and educator whose video and installation work focuses on the intersections of intimate experience and digital life. She received an MA in Media Studies from the New School University, and an MFA from University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She is a founding member of the Durham, NC branch of the Public School, a vehicle for community resourced education, and ran the Chapel Hill Flicker Film Festival from 2008 – 2010. She is the editor and co-producer of a collaborative work with Pedro Lasch called the Twin Towers Go Global, an internet memorial using new and old social media, recently showcased at dOCUMENTA (13) and forthcoming in book form. 10:30-11 am: Frye Gaillard & Kathryn Scheldt
Frye Gaillard, writer in residence at the University of South Alabama, has written extensively on southern race relations, politics and culture. His new book is The Quilt and the Poetry of Alabama Music, a collaboration with singer/songwriter Kathryn Scheldt (see below). He is former Southern Editor at The Charlotte Observer, where he covered Charlotte’s landmark school desegregation controversy, the ill-fated ministry of televangelist Jim Bakker, the funeral of Elvis Presley, and the presidency of Jimmy Carter. Gaillard has written or edited more than twenty books, and his award-winning titles include the following: Cradle of Freedom: Alabama and the Movement That Changed America; The Dream Long Deferred: The Landmark Struggle for Desegregation in Charlotte, North Carolina; Watermelon Wine: The Spirit of Country Music; If I Were a Carpenter: Twenty Years of Habitat for Humanity; Prophet from Plains: Jimmy Carter and His Legacy; and As Long As the Waters Flow: Native Americans in the South and East. Gaillard now lives on the Alabama Gulf Coast with his wife, Nancy, who teaches in the College of Education at the University of South Alabama.
Kathryn Scheldt is an authentic voice from the Alabama Gulf coast and an expert songwriter. Her fifth and latest CD , “One Good Reason, ” was released in the fall of 2011 by Lamon Records of Nashville. Produced by Mike Severs, “One Good Reason” features some powerfully expressive original songs and was recorded at Nashville’s finest studios and with a star-studded band. An active performer, Kathryn has appeared in such legendary southern venues as the Bluebird Café in Nashville,TN, Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, GA and Thacker Mountain Radio in Oxford MS to name a few. Before beginning her recording career, she studied guitar under Grammy winner, David Russell, and earned her Master of Music. She is the author of two songbooks from Mel Bay Publications and has served on the music faculties of Queens University and the University of South Alabama.
